The 260-metre ridge that rises immediately south of central Castries gives the best view in the city: the harbour, the green spine of the Vigie peninsula, and the open Caribbean stretching west toward the open sea. At the top of the climb is Fort Charlotte, a sprawling complex of barracks, redoubts, and a powder magazine built first by the French and added to by the British across the 18th and 19th centuries.
Today parts of the fort house Sir Arthur Lewis Community College and a small museum, and the rest is left as picturesque ruin. Come up by taxi or shared van, walk along the ramparts, and have lunch at one of the small restaurants on the way back down. The road is steep but driveable.
