The hooked spit of land that closes off Castries harbour to the north is the Vigie ("Lookout") Peninsula. A pretty 19th-century lighthouse stands at the tip, an old French battery sits halfway along, and the road continues round to George F. L. Charles Airport, whose single short runway crosses the peninsula side to side.
The cemetery on the south slope contains memorials to British and French soldiers and sailors who fell in the long colonial wars over the island. The whole walk from town and back, including Vigie Beach, takes about two hours and gives you the best feel for the geography of Castries.
