Mystery Tombstone

A 1783 tombstone in Plymouth whose inscription has never been satisfactorily explained

In a small fenced plot at Plymouth, Tobago's second town, stands a tombstone dated 1783 bearing an inscription that has puzzled historians for over two centuries. The stone marks the grave of Betty Stiven, and reads: "She was a mother without knowing it, and a wife without letting her husband know it, except by her kind indulgences to him." Nobody has ever satisfactorily explained what the inscription means, and it has attracted scholarly speculation ranging from the mundane to the scandalous.

The tombstone is in the middle of a roundabout area, somewhat anticlimactically, but it's the kind of small oddity that makes Tobago's history feel genuinely strange. Plymouth itself has a market worth visiting on Fridays and a couple of local restaurants. The town is a convenient stopping point when driving the leeward coast between Crown Point and Castara, and the mystery tombstone is only worth a five-minute detour.
