Speyside

Tobago's premier dive village on the Atlantic coast, with manta rays, large barrel sponges, and trips to Little Tobago

Speyside is a small fishing village on Tobago's northeastern Atlantic coast, and the island's most serious diving destination. The waters off Speyside are nutrient-rich where Caribbean and Atlantic currents converge, supporting large populations of manta rays, eagle rays, and enormous barrel sponges — some of the biggest in the Caribbean, measuring over 2 metres across. The dive sites here include Japanese Gardens, Kelleston Drain (famous for manta encounters), and the wreck of the Maverick ferry sunk as an artificial reef.

Several dive operators are based in Speyside, all offering similar packages: two-tank dives, certification courses, and snorkelling trips. Trips to Little Tobago for birdwatching typically depart from Speyside Pier, a five-minute boat ride across Batteaux Bay. Non-divers come for the birdwatching: the forest between Speyside and the ridge holds many of the species that make Tobago one of the better birding destinations in the Eastern Caribbean.

A story
Speyside is home to one of the only spots in the Caribbean where you can reliably see manta rays year-round. The mantas congregate off Batteaux Bay where warm Caribbean water meets cooler Atlantic upwellings, creating a plankton bloom that the rays feed on. The largest dive site, Japanese Gardens, gets its name from the intricate branching coral formations that divers in the 1980s thought resembled Japanese garden arrangements.
