The Grand Turk Wall

The Grand Turk Wall is the reason serious divers come to the Turks and Caicos. A continuous vertical reef, dropping from 30 feet down to extreme depth, runs along the entire western shore of the island, with the lip never more than a quarter-mile from the beach.

Visibility is consistently 30 metres or better, the coral is healthy by Caribbean standards, and the dives are easy: short boat rides, no surge, no current at depth. Most operators run two-tank morning trips and offer night dives from the shore. Half a dozen dive shops cluster around Front Street; book at least a day ahead in the cruise season.

A story
The wall is the edge of the Turks Bank, a 7,000-foot drop into the Columbus Passage. Hammerheads and the eastern migration of humpback whales pass within sight of the reef in January and February — Grand Turk is one of the few places in the world where divers can drift along a wall and hear whales singing through their regulators.
