Cockburn Harbour

The single small settlement on South Caicos, a quiet fishing port wrapped around a deepwater bay

Cockburn Harbour is South Caicos's only town and one of the prettiest natural ports in the Caribbean — a deep, sheltered bay that gives the island its other name, the "Big South" of the salt trade. The settlement is a loose grid of pastel cottages, two churches, a couple of small grocers, and a long concrete jetty where the conch and lobster fleets come and go. Government buildings cluster around Front Street; one or two have hung on from the 19th century.

It is a working harbour rather than a tourist scene. Walk the seawall at dusk when the boats are tying up — the catch is unloaded straight onto the dock and trucked across the island to the fish-processing plant. Don't expect cafés open after dark.
