Sail Rock and the South-End Beaches

The long, empty beaches at the southern end of the island, with offshore reef and a single distinctive rock

The southern third of South Caicos is given over to long, empty white-sand beaches facing the open Atlantic. The most popular stretch is the half-mile crescent off Sail Rock, named for the small triangular limestone outcrop that sits just offshore. The reef runs in close, so the snorkelling from shore is good; the offshore wind keeps the water clear; and you can walk for an hour without seeing anyone.

There are no facilities at all — no shade, no shop, no lifeguards — so bring water, sunscreen and a rashie. The track down from the main road is dusty and uneven; a four-wheel-drive is easier in summer but it can usually be done in a standard rental.
