Burritt on the Mountain sits on the edge of the Monte Sano plateau about 400 feet above the valley floor, and the views over Huntsville and the Tennessee Valley are among the best in north Alabama. The property combines two distinct attractions: the Burritt Mansion, an unusual X-shaped 1930s house turned museum of local history and decorative arts, and a Historic Park of reconstructed 19th-century farm buildings where costumed interpreters demonstrate early Alabama rural life.
The farm buildings — a log cabin, smokehouse, barn, and others — were brought to the site from around north Alabama and reassembled to form a coherent 1800s homestead. Special events throughout the year include blacksmithing demonstrations, hearth cooking, and seasonal celebrations. The trails around the property connect to the Monte Sano State Park trail network, and the drive up Monte Sano Boulevard through the shaded ridge-top neighborhood is pleasant in itself. The facility is managed by the City of Huntsville and is worth two hours on a clear day.
