Huntsville sits in a valley in north Alabama and has a humid subtropical climate with four distinct seasons. Spring (March to May) is the most pleasant time to visit — warm temperatures, wildflowers on Monte Sano, and the city at its most lively. The Panoply Arts Festival fills Big Spring Park every late April, drawing artists, musicians, and food vendors for a long weekend.
Summer is hot and humid, with temperatures regularly reaching the mid-90s Fahrenheit (35°C+). The U.S. Space and Rocket Center's indoor exhibits make it a reasonable destination for families even in the heat, but outdoor activities are best confined to early morning. Autumn brings reliably clear skies and cool temperatures through October and November — the best hiking season on Monte Sano. Winter is mild by northern standards but can be grey and wet; the occasional ice storm closes roads but rarely lasts more than a day.
The Huntsville Botanical Garden is at its best in spring for the azaleas and dogwood, and again in late summer for the butterfly garden. The Panoply Arts Festival in April and Concerts in the Park at Big Spring International Park (typically May through August) are the main outdoor events.
