Lowe Mill ARTS & Entertainment

Lowe Mill ARTS & Entertainment is a converted 1900s cotton mill in South Huntsville that has become the city's most dynamic cultural venue. The five-story building holds more than 150 working artists' studios, galleries, performance spaces, a cinema, restaurants, and craft producers. On weekends the studios are generally open for visitors to walk through, watch artists at work, and buy directly from the maker. The density of creative activity under one roof is genuinely unusual.

The complex anchors what has become a broader arts district in the Lowe Mill corridor — several other galleries and creative businesses have opened nearby, and the area sees steady foot traffic on weekend afternoons. Concerts and events run most weekends in the first-floor performance area; check the website for the current calendar. The food and drink options inside the building are reasonable for lunch or a snack. It is located about two miles south of downtown, easily reached by car or a short Uber ride.

A story
Lowe Mill is housed in a former cotton mill built in 1900 that at its peak employed hundreds of workers from the surrounding South Huntsville neighbourhood. After decades of decline and eventual closure, the building sat empty for years before being converted into an arts centre in 2010. It is now the largest privately owned arts centre in the United States — a claim that surprises people who have not heard of Huntsville as a cultural destination.
