Monte Sano State Park

Monte Sano State Park sits atop the Monte Sano plateau east of Huntsville at an elevation of around 1,600 feet, providing a significant temperature difference from the city below on summer days. The park covers nearly 2,000 acres and offers 20 miles of marked hiking trails ranging from gentle ridge-top walks to steeper descents into hollows. The North Plateau Loop and the Stone Cuts trail — named for exposed sandstone outcroppings — are popular choices with strong views.

Camping is available, including cabins and tent sites with electrical hookups. The park connects at its western edge with Burritt on the Mountain, allowing a combined visit. The drive up Monte Sano Boulevard through the shaded residential ridge-top neighbourhood is part of the experience — pull off at the overlook on the way up for a view across the Tennessee Valley. Trails are open year-round, but autumn is the preferred season: clear skies, cool temperatures, and some fall color on the hardwoods.

A story
Monte Sano — Spanish for "Mountain of Health" — was a 19th-century resort destination long before it became a state park. Wealthy Huntsville families came up to escape summer heat and malaria in the valley below, and a hotel complex called the Hygeia Hotel operated here from the 1880s until a fire destroyed it in 1912. The mountain's name and its original appeal were the same thing: elevation as medicine.
