Huntsville Museum of Art

The Huntsville Museum of Art occupies a modern building on the western edge of Big Spring Park, a short walk from the courthouse square. Founded in 1970, it holds a permanent collection of around 3,000 works covering American art, Asian decorative arts, European prints, and a growing contemporary holdings. The scale is manageable — a visitor can see the permanent collection thoroughly in a couple of hours — and the building's large windows look out directly over the park and the spring lake.

Traveling exhibitions rotate through regularly, and the museum runs an active schedule of lectures, family programs, and evening events. It is free for children under five and affordable for adults. The adjacent outdoor amphitheatre hosts summer concerts. If you are in Big Spring Park anyway — for the Panoply Arts Festival, a lunch break, or a visit to the Von Braun Center — the museum is an easy addition.

A story
The museum's permanent collection includes a substantial holding of American art spanning the 18th century to the present, with particular strength in Southern regionalist painting from the 1930s and 1940s. One of the more surprising holdings is a collection of works by self-taught Alabama artists acquired over decades — a reminder that the state's outsider art tradition is as robust as anywhere in the South.
