Salty Dawg Saloon

Homer's most famous bar — a shack on the Spit wallpapered with dollar bills

The Salty Dawg Saloon is one of Alaska's most famous drinking establishments — a low wooden building on the Homer Spit with a lighthouse tower, dark interior, and walls and ceiling almost entirely covered with dollar bills. The tradition of stapling a signed dollar to any available surface has been going since the early days, and what started as a way to ensure every fisherman could afford a drink has become a decades-deep layer of paper money.

The bar itself is a standard small Alaskan roadhouse — cheap beer, strong drinks, a jukebox, fishermen and visitors in roughly equal measure. Come for the atmosphere and the local colour; it is genuinely what it claims to be rather than a constructed tourist attraction. The building was originally a post office, then a homestead cabin, and was moved to its current site on the Spit in the 1950s.
