Getting Around

Homer is a car town. The two main areas — the town centre up on the bluff along Pioneer Avenue, and the Homer Spit — are about 5 km apart, connected by Homer Spit Road. There is no reliable public transit between them. If you arrive without a car, taxis are available but limited and expensive.

On the Spit everything is walkable once you're there — the whole strip is 7 km long and flat. Biking the Spit on a fine day is one of the better ways to spend an afternoon; bike rental is available in season near the harbour end.

In town, the main commercial strip on Pioneer Avenue and the residential neighbourhoods above it are all walkable. The Pratt Museum, the library, and most services are in this area.

Water taxis are the main form of onward transport for the far shore of the bay. Several companies run from the Spit marina to Kachemak Bay State Park trailheads, Halibut Cove, and Seldovia. They operate on schedule and on demand; check the boards at the marina end of the Spit.
