Homer is best visited from May through September. The fishing season runs May to September; Kachemak Bay State Park is accessible from May; July and August have the best weather and longest days — the sun doesn't set until after 11pm in midsummer. August is peak season for halibut and silver salmon.
The shoulder months of May and September are quieter, cooler, and often beautiful: May brings the return of migrating shorebirds and the greening of the hillsides; September has the salmon running and the first snow on the distant peaks. Rain is possible at any time — bring waterproof layers regardless of when you come.
Winter is quiet and cold (averaging -6°C in January) with deep snow on the mountains. A small population stays year-round and the town has a lively arts and music scene through the winter, but most visitor infrastructure shuts down.
