Getting There

Homer is at the end of the Sterling Highway, about 350 km south of Anchorage — a 4.5 to 5 hour drive through the Kenai Peninsula. The drive is one of the most scenic in Alaska, passing through Kenai Fjords territory, alongside Kachemak Bay, and through spruce forest. Most people arrive by car.

Homer Airport (HOM) has scheduled service from Anchorage several times a day on small regional airlines. The flight takes about 30 minutes and the view over Kachemak Bay on approach is one of the better approaches in Alaska. Car rental is available at the airport but limited — reserve well in advance in summer.

The Alaska Marine Highway ferry connects Homer to Seldovia (across the bay), Kodiak, Juneau, and other southeast Alaska ports. Sailings are not daily and schedules change seasonally; check the Alaska Marine Highway website for current timetables.
