Halibut Fishing

Charter halibut fishing on Kachemak Bay, Homer's main visitor activity

Halibut fishing is the main reason most visitors come to Homer, and the town takes it seriously. Charter boats leave from the Homer Spit marina every morning from May through September, usually for all-day trips on Kachemak Bay or further out into Cook Inlet. The bay is highly productive and the fish run large — 50 to 100 kg halibut are caught regularly, and anything over 200 lbs is not remarkable. Halibut are bottom fish, caught on heavy line with bait, and the technique is straightforward enough for beginners.

Charter companies on the Spit offer full-day (8–10 hours) and half-day options, with all equipment included. Book ahead in summer. Most charters will clean and vacuum-pack your catch for transport; Homer has services to ship fish home, and bringing back a cooler of halibut fillets is standard practice. Even if fishing isn't your normal activity, a day on the water with Kachemak Bay's mountains and wildlife around you is worthwhile.
