The Homestead Restaurant

Alaska's best roadside steak and seafood, out on East End Road

The Homestead Restaurant sits on East End Road about 10 km from downtown — a deliberate drive, but one that locals consider worth making. The menu is a serious Alaska surf-and-turf: halibut, salmon, king crab alongside prime rib and steaks, with everything prepared with more care than you might expect from the log-cabin exterior. The salad bar is a local institution.

It looks and feels like a roadhouse from the outside, but the cooking and the wine list are several notches above that. Book ahead in summer; it is one of the most popular restaurants on the peninsula. The drive out through the farming country above Homer is pleasant on a clear evening.
