Sea Kayaking on Kachemak Bay

Guided and self-guided sea kayaking on Kachemak Bay with otters, eagles, and mountain views

Kachemak Bay is one of the premier sea kayaking destinations in Alaska. The water is calm in the inner bay when the weather cooperates, sea otters float past at close range, bald eagles circle overhead, and the mountain backdrop across the water from Kachemak Bay State Park is rarely matched. Several outfitters on the Homer Spit offer guided half-day and full-day paddles, with all equipment provided and no previous kayaking experience required.

More experienced paddlers can rent boats and paddle independently to the far shore, though the crossing requires checking wind and tide conditions carefully — conditions can change fast and the bay is wide. The area around Halibut Cove Lagoon in Kachemak Bay State Park is considered some of the best coastal kayaking in the state, combining protected water, wildlife, and dramatic scenery within a single day's paddling range.
