Cosanti

Soleri's home studio in the Paradise Valley neighbourhood is an extraordinary collection of cast-concrete domes and sunken outdoor rooms, half buried in the desert, with a working ceramic bell foundry at its centre. Visitors wander freely through the buildings, and on most weekdays you can watch the foundry team pour molten bronze into sand-cast moulds to make the bells that have become Soleri's signature.

Admission is free; the bells are reasonably priced for what they are. Combine with a stop at Soleri's larger experimental city Arcosanti, an hour north of Phoenix near Cordes Junction, if you have the time and the curiosity.

A story
Paolo Soleri, an Italian architect who studied with Frank Lloyd Wright at Taliesin West, built Cosanti as both a studio and a working experiment in his 'arcology' theory of compact, low-impact urban design. The famous wind-bell foundry that funds the place was invented as a fundraiser; the bells are now collected worldwide.
