Great Papago Escape Tunnel

A simple stone marker in Papago Park, on the south-western edge of Scottsdale, identifies the site of the largest prisoner-of-war escape on American soil during the Second World War. The camp itself is long gone — the buildings were dismantled in the 1950s — but the marker, the surrounding desert, and the famous "buttes" of the park give a sense of what the prisoners faced.

The tunnel exit was rediscovered in the 1980s. Combine with a visit to the Desert Botanical Garden a few minutes' walk away.

A story
On the night of 23 December 1944, twenty-five German naval prisoners broke out of Camp Papago Park through a 178-foot hand-dug tunnel and tried to make it to Mexico — one group with a homemade canvas boat they planned to launch on the Salt River, only to discover the river was dry. All twenty-five were eventually recaptured.
