Kayaking around Catalina's shoreline is one of the best ways to access sea caves, secluded coves, and kelp beds that are inaccessible on foot. The water close to shore is usually calmer than the open channel, and on flat-water days you can paddle several kilometres from Avalon along the cliff coast in either direction. Sea caves north of Avalon are a popular destination.
Kayak rentals are available on the Avalon waterfront, with both single and double boats. Guided tours run to specific destinations and include snorkelling stops. The water is coldest in January–March (around 14°C) and warmest in late summer (around 20°C). A wetsuit is recommended at any time of year, particularly if you plan to get in the water.
