Catalina is split between Avalon's compact waterfront charm and the wild interior of the Catalina Island Conservancy. In town, the Casino Building and museum are the main draws. Beyond Avalon, hiking trails wind through surprisingly rugged hills past bison and endemic island foxes, and the clear waters offer some of the best snorkelling and kayaking near Los Angeles. Two Harbors, on the far side of the island, is a different world entirely — remote, quiet, and accessible by ferry or a two-day trail hike.
