Berkeley Springs

West Virginia spa town built around warm mineral springs, mountain views, and a small arts scene.

Berkeley Springs is a small West Virginia town with an unusually clear identity: warm mineral water in the middle of town, old spa rituals, and Appalachian ridges rising close enough to make the streets feel tucked away. It has drawn bathers for centuries, including colonial visitors who helped turn the springs into one of the older resort traditions in the United States.

Berkeley Springs State Park is the heart of town, with open spring pools, a Roman bath house, and the small Museum of the Berkeley Springs upstairs. A few blocks away, the Ice House and Star Theatre keep the town from feeling like a spa brochure.

The setting matters as much as the water. Prospect Overlook gives a fast view across three states, and Cacapon Resort State Park turns Berkeley Springs into a good base for a day of walking, lake time, or ridge views.

Guide

Getting There

Berkeley Springs sits on US 522 in West Virginia's Eastern Panhandle, about two hours by car from Washington, DC or Baltimore in normal traffic. The town is much easier with a car, especially if you plan to visit Cacapon Resort State Park or Prospect Overlook.

The nearest larger rail and air connections are outside town, so most visitors arrive by road from Maryland, Virginia, Pennsylvania, or the Shenandoah Valley.
