Fonts Point

A rock outcrop at the edge of a cliff with one of the great desert views in California: the Borrego Badlands fall away below in a labyrinth of pink and grey eroded ridges that catch the light differently every hour. The drop from the rim is sudden and dramatic, looking south across the Carrizo Badlands all the way to the Salton Sea on a clear day.

The four-mile spur off Highway S-22 is dirt and sand and requires a high-clearance vehicle — preferably four-wheel-drive after rain. Sunrise and sunset are the times to come. There are no facilities, no shade and no reliable phone signal; carry water.

A story
Fonts Point is named for Father Pedro Font, a Franciscan missionary who travelled with Anza's 1775 expedition and recorded the first European description of the badlands below. The route up was once a Cahuilla footpath; today the four miles of soft sand wash that lead to it have a habit of swallowing under-prepared two-wheel-drive cars during wildflower season.
