Hermosa Beach

Compact South Bay beach city known for volleyball, a busy pier, and an easygoing bar scene.

Hermosa Beach is the livelier, less polished middle child of the South Bay beach towns, squeezed between Manhattan Beach and Redondo Beach. It has a short downtown, a broad strand of sand, and enough bars around Pier Avenue to make it feel younger than its neighbours.

The beach is the point. Volleyball nets line the sand, the paved Strand runs along the coast, and the Hermosa Beach Pier gives the town its natural meeting place. Nearby, the Lighthouse Cafe keeps alive a real jazz history that most casual beach visitors miss.

Hermosa works best as an easy day or evening from Los Angeles: walk or bike the Strand, eat near Pier Plaza, then stay for music or a drink. It is not the place for major museums or grand architecture, but for South Bay beach life it is hard to beat.

Bars and Cafes

Hermosa's bar scene is clustered around Pier Avenue and the beach, so it is easy to improvise after dinner. The Lighthouse Cafe is the standout because it has a real music history rather than just a good location.

Weekend nights can be loud and crowded. For a calmer drink, come earlier in the evening or stay a few blocks back from the pier.

Beaches

Hermosa's beach is wide, sandy, and active, with volleyball courts, surfers, runners, and cyclists all sharing the same narrow coastal strip. It is more social than secluded, especially near Pier Avenue.

If you want a longer outing, follow the Strand north to Manhattan Beach or south toward Redondo. Distances are short, flat, and far more pleasant by bike or on foot than by car.

Getting There

Hermosa Beach is southwest of central Los Angeles and south of LAX. Driving is the usual approach, but parking close to the beach can be tight on sunny weekends and summer evenings.

Cycling along the Strand is the most pleasant way to move between the South Bay beach towns once you are there. Rideshare trips work well for evenings when you do not want to deal with beach parking.

Things to Do

Hermosa Beach is simple: the beach, the pier, the Strand, and the streets around Pier Avenue. The Hermosa Beach Pier is the obvious landmark, while the Strand is the best way to stitch together Manhattan Beach, Hermosa, and Redondo on foot or by bike.

For something more local, look for live music at the Lighthouse Cafe, or time a visit around beach volleyball events when the sand becomes the centre of town.
