Pinecrest is a small Sierra Nevada resort village wrapped around Pinecrest Lake, northeast of Sonora on Highway 108. It is not a big mountain town, and that is the point: the useful part of the place is compact, walkable, and focused on the lake, the forest, and the season you arrive in.
In summer, Pinecrest is about swimming, trout fishing, boat rentals, and the five-mile loop around the lake to Strawberry Dam. The mood is old California family cabin country rather than polished alpine resort. You will see general-store snacks, pine needles on the beach, and generations of cabin owners who treat the place as a summer ritual.
Winter changes the calculation. Nearby Dodge Ridge and Leland Meadows turn Pinecrest into an easy snow base for people coming up from the Central Valley. It is a good one-day escape if you are already in the Sierra foothills, and a simple overnight if you want lake air without the scale or prices of Tahoe.
