The Julian Gold Rush Hotel, also known as the Julian Hotel, is the oldest continuously operating hotel in Southern California. The building dates to 1897, when it was constructed by Albert Robinson and his wife Margaret, formerly enslaved people who had come west during California's gold rush and settled in Julian. The hotel is now listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
From the outside the hotel is modest — a two-storey wooden building on Main Street with a Victorian-era porch. The rooms are furnished with period pieces and antiques, and the inn operates as a bed-and-breakfast. Even if you are not staying, it is worth stopping for a look at the building and the small historical displays inside. The story of the Robinsons is one of the more remarkable histories in the state.
