Santa Ysabel County Preserves

Oak woodland and grassland preserve north of Julian, with quiet hiking and riding trails.

Santa Ysabel County Preserves cover rolling ranch country north of Julian, with oak woodland, native grassland, seasonal wildflowers, and long open views across the backcountry. The preserve is split into East and West sections, and the East staging area on Farmer Road gives the easiest access from Julian.

The trails are quieter and less dramatic than Cuyamaca Rancho State Park, but that makes them useful if you want space rather than a checklist sight. Hikers, cyclists, and equestrians share more than 15 miles of routes, including parts of the Coast to Crest Trail. In warm weather, start early; shade appears in patches rather than continuously.
