Mission San Luis Rey de Francia

Mission San Luis Rey de Francia stands about four miles inland from Oceanside, founded in 1798 by Father Fermín Lasuén. It is the largest of the California missions and one of the best preserved — the church itself, with its Moorish dome and neoclassical facade, is still in active religious use, served by Franciscan friars.

The mission complex includes a museum with a good collection of Spanish colonial-era vestments, religious art, and historical documents. The grounds are open for self-guided tours, and the cemetery contains the graves of early mission inhabitants. The sunken gardens behind the church are peaceful and attractive. The site sits in a quiet valley that feels remote despite being just minutes from the freeway.

A story
Mission San Luis Rey was founded in 1798 and became the largest of California's 21 missions by population — at its peak in 1826, more than 2,800 Native Luiseño people lived in the mission complex. It was also the most prosperous, with vast herds of cattle and extensive farmland. After Mexican secularisation in 1833 it fell into ruin, but was restored in the late 19th century. The Franciscan friars who live there today continue the unbroken tradition of religious life on the site.
