Fallen David

Behind the McCarthy Hall building on the Cal State Fullerton campus lies what may be the most peculiar piece of public art in Orange County — the broken remains of a marble replica of Michelangelo's David, knocked over and smashed by the 1987 Whittier Narrows earthquake. The university decided to leave the fragments in place as a memorial to the quake, and the toppled statue has become a quietly philosophical campus landmark.

Visitors will find the head, torso, and limbs scattered across a small patch of grass behind the building. There are no signs or interpretive markers; you simply come across the wreckage and work out what it is. The site is open at all times and free.

A story
The replica of Michelangelo's David that once stood in the centre of the Cal State Fullerton campus was knocked from its pedestal and shattered by the magnitude-5.9 Whittier Narrows earthquake on 1 October 1987. Rather than repair or remove the wreckage, the university left it lying where it fell — and the pieces remain there today, slowly being reclaimed by weather and lichen.
