Fox Fullerton Theatre

The Fox Fullerton Theatre is a 1925 movie palace by the Hollywood firm Meyer & Holler, the same architects behind Grauman's Chinese Theatre. Its Mission Revival facade — white stucco, tile roof, and a tall central pylon — has anchored downtown Fullerton for a century. The theatre closed in 1987 and has been undergoing a long, drawn-out restoration ever since; sections have reopened for occasional concerts and screenings.

The Spanish Colonial Revival interior, with its painted ceiling and ornate plasterwork, is the highlight when accessible. The exterior alone is worth a look as you walk through downtown. Check ahead for restoration progress and current events; the theatre is a centrepiece of local efforts to preserve Fullerton's pre-war architecture.

A story
Designed by the prominent Los Angeles firm Meyer & Holler — also responsible for Grauman's Chinese Theatre in Hollywood — the Fox opened on 28 May 1925 as one of the first movie palaces in Orange County. Bing Crosby and Mickey Rooney both performed on its stage, and Charlie Chaplin reportedly attended the premiere of one of his films here in the late 1920s.
