Laguna Niguel

Planned south Orange County city with coastal access, regional parks, and suburban canyon landscapes.

Laguna Niguel is a planned suburban city in south Orange County, between Los Angeles and San Diego, incorporated in 1989. It is a quiet, well-kept residential community without a traditional downtown, but it has easy access to the beaches of Laguna Beach just to the west, the hills and trails of Aliso and Wood Canyons Wilderness Park, and the coastal paths along Salt Creek Beach.

The city is primarily residential, but there are restaurants and shops clustered around the main commercial corridors — La Paz Road and Crown Valley Parkway. Laguna Niguel Regional Park provides a recreational lake and trails in the city's interior. The most unusual landmark in the area is the Ziggurat Building, an inverted pyramid federal office building visible from the freeway. Laguna Niguel is close enough to the ocean to catch sea breezes but far enough inland that property prices are lower than in neighboring Laguna Beach.

Eating Out

Laguna Niguel's dining options are spread across its commercial corridors rather than concentrated in a walkable centre. Saltwater Grill on the corner of La Paz and Aliso Creek serves Mexican dishes with a California twist — the calamari tacos and chile rellenos are local favorites, and there is outdoor seating and a full bar. Across the street, Bella Italian Kitchen is a small, casual spot known for its chicken pesto rigatoni.
