Sugarloaf Ridge State Park

Sonoma Valley state park with oak woodland trails, waterfalls, and a public observatory.

Sugarloaf Ridge State Park sits in the hills east of Santa Rosa, where oak woodland, chaparral, and redwood pockets climb toward the Mayacamas range. Trails range from easy creek walks to steeper routes up Bald Mountain, and in wet months the park’s waterfall gives the landscape a welcome bit of drama.

The park is also known for the Robert Ferguson Observatory, one of the better public astronomy stops in Northern California. It is a real day-out POI rather than a quick downtown sight, so allow time for the drive and a proper walk. On hot days, start early and carry more water than you think you need.
