The town itself is small but the surroundings are extraordinary. Walk the Truckee River trail from the Fanny Bridge, paddle out from Commons Beach, or drive a few minutes to the Palisades Tahoe gondola for a ride above the 1960 Winter Olympics ski terrain. The Watson Cabin Museum on the lakefront and the Gatekeeper's Museum at the river outlet both cover early Tahoe history; the latter holds the Marion Steinbach Indian Basket Museum, one of the best Washoe and Maidu basketry collections in the West.
