Tahoe City is a small lakeside community on the northwestern shore of Lake Tahoe, the main hub for services and accommodation on the California side of the lake's north shore. The Fanny Bridge over the Truckee River outlet is a popular stop for watching large trout holding in the current below. In winter, Palisades Tahoe (formerly Squaw Valley) and Alpine Meadows ski resorts are a short drive away.
In summer the town is a base for hiking, mountain biking, kayaking, and sailing on the lake. Commons Beach in the town centre has a small sandy beach with views across the famously clear blue water, and the paved Truckee River Trail runs along the river through pine forest. The Gatekeeper's Museum at the lake outlet holds an outstanding collection of Washoe and Maidu basketry. Tahoe City has all the practical infrastructure — restaurants, rental outfitters, gear shops — and is the most convenient starting point for exploring the north shore.
