Green Cay Wetlands

A 100-acre constructed wetland on the western edge of Boynton Beach that has become one of the best birding spots in Palm Beach County. A 1.5-mile elevated boardwalk loops through open marsh and cattail beds — visitors walk at water level with herons, moorhens, anhingas, gallinules, and alligators just feet away. The lack of natural impediments between the boardwalk and the water makes this exceptional for photography.

Green Cay is free to enter and open year-round during daylight hours. Mornings are best — the birds are most active in the first two hours after sunrise. Bring binoculars; the marsh extends far enough that a spotting scope helps for the far tree islands where roosting colonies sometimes gather. The county occasionally posts bird checklists at the entrance kiosk.
