Brooksville is an inland Florida town with more hills and older bones than you expect this close to the Gulf Coast sprawl. It is the county seat of Hernando County, but the good bits for travelers are its Victorian houses, small museums, and the rolling country north of town.
The town is worth a short day if you like old Florida history. May-Stringer House is the showpiece, a four-story painted-lady museum on a hill. The 1885 Brooksville Train Depot keeps the rail story alive, while Chinsegut Hill adds a deeper, stranger layer just north of town.
Brooksville is not a resort and should not be treated like one. Come for a slow loop through historic houses, local history, and shady live-oak roads, then keep going toward the Nature Coast or the Withlacoochee trails.
