The Southernmost Point buoy is a large concrete marker painted in red, yellow, and black, sitting at the corner of Whitehead and South Streets. It marks 90 miles to Cuba and claims the title of southernmost point in the continental United States. There is almost always a queue of people waiting to be photographed beside it.
The buoy's fame is disproportionate to its actual impressiveness — it's a concrete block painted like a lighthouse. But the queue is short, the photo is quick, and the location at the island's southern tip is genuinely dramatic: you can see the Atlantic on one side and the Gulf on the other, and the buoy sits in a residential neighbourhood of attractive wooden houses that is worth wandering.
