Hardman Farm State Historic Site

Hardman Farm State Historic Site, in the Nacoochee Valley 3 miles south of Helen, is a beautifully preserved Victorian-era farmstead that gives a vivid picture of prosperous Appalachian Georgia in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The complex includes the main farmhouse (c. 1870), several outbuildings, and a grist mill, all restored and interpreted by the Georgia Department of Natural Resources.

The site is open for guided tours on weekends and by appointment. The farmhouse interior — with original furnishings, medical equipment from Dr Hardman's practice, and family photographs — is particularly good. The Nacoochee Valley setting, with the mound visible nearby and the mountains behind, is as attractive as any rural historic site in the South.

A story
Hardman Farm was the country estate of Lamartine Griffin Hardman, Governor of Georgia from 1927 to 1931. He was a physician-politician who ran the farm as a model agricultural operation during the Depression era, introducing scientific farming methods to the region. The estate is one of the best-preserved Victorian and Edwardian farm complexes in the state.
