Neptune Park and the Pier

Neptune Park sits at the southern tip of the island, between the lighthouse, the pier, and the village. The park is named for Neptune Small, a Black servant who carried his master's body home from the Civil War battlefield of Fredericksburg in 1862 and was given land here in recognition. A statue marks the site.

The park is the social heart of the island: a children's playground, a swimming pool, a fishing pier, picnic tables, the village casino building. Most of the visitor activity in the off-season is centred here, and the sunset views west across the marsh are the daily local ritual. Parking is free. Combine with a visit to the lighthouse and a meal in the village two blocks north.
