Southern Soul Barbecue

Southern Soul Barbecue, on Demere Road on the way out of the village, has been one of the most respected pit barbecue joints in coastal Georgia for years. It is housed in a converted gas station — green roof, picnic tables in front — with the smokers visible at the back of the lot. Smoke from the pecan and oak wood drifts across the parking lot all afternoon.

Pulled pork is the speciality; the brisket and the smoked chicken are nearly as good. The Brunswick stew — a Georgia coastal stew of pork, chicken, corn, and tomato — is the side to order, and the banana pudding is the dessert. Order at the counter; lines move fast. Cash and cards both fine.
