Stanley Museum of Art

The University of Iowa's art museum reopened in 2022 in a striking new building by BNIM at the edge of the Pentacrest. Its collection runs to fifteen thousand works, with particular strength in 20th-century American painting — Jackson Pollock's Mural, a defining work of Abstract Expressionism painted for Peggy Guggenheim in 1943, lives here — and in African art, where the Stanley family's gift of more than five hundred pieces ranks the holding among the finest at any university museum.

Admission is free. Allow an hour for the highlights and longer if the temporary exhibition appeals.

A story
When the Iowa River flooded in 2008 the museum's home took on six feet of water and Jackson Pollock's *Mural* — one of the most important American paintings of the 20th century — had to be airlifted out. The new Stanley building, opened in 2022, was designed from the ground up to keep that from ever happening again.
