University of Iowa Museum of Natural History

Tucked into Macbride Hall on the Pentacrest, this is one of the oldest university museums in the country and still has the wood-and-glass feel of a Victorian cabinet of curiosities. The Hageboeck Hall of Birds — three thousand mounted specimens arranged ecologically — and the Iowa Hall diorama gallery are the two not-to-miss rooms.

Admission is free. Kids tend to love it; adults find the late-19th-century display cases almost as interesting as what's inside them.

A story
The museum's giant ground sloth was a wedding present. A 1936 alumnus commissioned the cast in the 1990s and gave it to his alma mater on the occasion of his fiftieth wedding anniversary — an animal that hasn't existed in Iowa for ten thousand years now greets every visitor who walks in.
