Bethel

Western Maine mountain village with skiing, river trips, minerals, and White Mountain trails.

Bethel is a western Maine mountain village on the Androscoggin River, close to Sunday River and the New Hampshire line. It has the bones of a classic New England town: a compact centre, old houses, a college-prep campus, and forested hills rising quickly outside town.

The outdoor draw is strong. Sunday River is one of the major ski areas in the Northeast and keeps busy in summer with lift rides, hiking, biking, and events. North of town, Grafton Notch State Park brings the Appalachian Trail into a rugged landscape of waterfalls, notches, and mountain views.

Bethel also has a better rainy-day hand than many mountain towns. The Maine Mineral and Gem Museum is serious and surprising, with meteorites and Maine tourmaline, while the Museums of the Bethel Historical Society keep the village's 19th-century story visible.
