S/S Katahdin

Restored 1914 steamboat running cruises on Moosehead Lake

The Katahdin is a National Historic Landmark and one of the last working examples of a class of steamers that once worked the inland waters of the north-east. She runs daytime cruises from Greenville Junction throughout the summer — typically a short loop and a longer trip up the lake to Mount Kineo. The interior, restored and immaculately kept, is wood-panelled and brass-trimmed.

A museum at the dock covers Moosehead lake's logging and steamboat history. Buy tickets ahead in July and August.

A story
The Katahdin (known locally as the Kate) was built in 1914 as a passenger steamer for the logging hotels around the lake. From the 1940s until 1975 she was used to tow huge log booms — the last log drive on the lake — and many of the surviving photographs of Maine river driving show her at work.
