Mount Kineo

800-foot cliff rising sheer out of Moosehead Lake, reached by boat

Mount Kineo is a freestanding cliff that rises 800 feet straight out of the middle of Moosehead Lake. From any angle on the lake it dominates the view. You reach it by a small shuttle boat from Rockwood, about 20 miles up the eastern shore from Greenville, then climb the Indian Trail or the Bridle Trail to the open summit — about an hour up, less down. The fire tower at the top opens onto one of the most spectacular views in Maine: lake, forest, and the distant ridges of Mount Katahdin and the Bigelows.

Bring water; there is no tap on the mountain.

A story
Native peoples quarried Mount Kineo's flint-like rhyolite for thousands of years to make spear points and tools; pieces from this single hill have been found across the entire north-east. A grand wooden hotel — the Mount Kineo House, once one of the largest inland resorts in America — burned on the summit in 1938.
