The two-block stretch of Baltimore Street between Liberty and George is the architectural heart of downtown Cumberland — a pedestrianised, almost theatrical row of late-19th-century commercial buildings in brick and cast iron. The Queen City was rich in the second half of the 1800s, and the storefronts are a record of that wealth.
Look up: the upper floors carry the best detail — pressed-metal cornices, arched window heads, the occasional date carved into the parapet. The street level houses cafes, antique shops, a bookshop, and the kind of small businesses that survive in a town slowly reinventing itself for cyclists and weekenders.
