Emmanuel Episcopal Church

Gothic Revival church built on the site of Fort Cumberland.

Emmanuel Episcopal stands on the hill at the centre of Cumberland — the same hill where Fort Cumberland once stood. The current Gothic Revival church was completed in 1851 in a sober brownstone, with a tall spire that still anchors the city skyline. Earthworks from the old fort, including a section of trench, can still be seen on the surrounding lawn.

Inside, look for the Tiffany stained-glass windows in the chancel and the elaborately carved oak choir stalls. The church is open most weekdays, with information leaflets at the door. Sunday services are still held in the high Episcopal tradition.
