LaVale Toll Gate House

Maryland's only surviving toll house on the historic National Road.

Five miles west of downtown Cumberland in the suburb of LaVale, the 1833 toll gate house is the only one of its type still standing in Maryland. It is a small, seven-sided brick building set right against the old road, with a hipped roof and the original toll-collector's window facing the highway.

The interior is normally closed but is open occasionally for tours run by the Allegany County Historical Society. Even from the outside, the building is worth a five-minute stop if you are heading west on US-40 — a tangible piece of America's first federally-funded highway.

A story
The toll gate was Maryland's first, built in 1833 when the federal government handed responsibility for the National Road back to the states. Travellers paid four cents for a horse and rider, ten cents for a wagon and team. It is the only surviving toll house in the state.
